So... for those who want more info:
How does wood become opalized?
Silicification: The process of silicification, also known as silicification or opalization, is what gives rise to opalized wood. Ancient wood is buried under soil and over time (LOTS of time,) silica-rich water infiltrates the wood's cellular structure. Gradually it replaces the original organic material, atom by atom, with silica. This happens slowly over millions of years until all the organic matter is replaced and an opal "stone" is formed.
